Step 1 - Pre-Construction
Before a mains sewer connection can begin, we’ll carry out a detailed Site Visit to assess your property and the most suitable connection route. This stage includes identifying the nearest public sewer, confirming connection points with the local water authority, and checking ground conditions or existing drainage layouts.
If required, we’ll also handle any Drainage Surveys or Section 106 applications, ensuring all permissions and approvals are in place before work begins.
Step 2 - Construction Phase
Once the pre-construction phase is complete and all permissions are approved, we’ll confirm your start date and begin the connection works. Our experienced team will handle the excavation, pipe installation, and connection to the public sewer, ensuring everything is completed to the highest standard and in full compliance with local authority requirements.
On average, a mains connection takes 5–10 working days, including any reinstatement or landscaping required to restore your property to its original condition.
Step 3 - Completion
Once your mains sewer connection is complete, our Construction Manager will visit the site to carry out a final inspection and sign off the works. This ensures every aspect of the installation meets our standards and the local water authority’s requirements.
Following approval, we’ll issue all relevant completion and Building Control certificates, giving you full peace of mind that your property is safely and legally connected to the mains.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need permission to connect to the mains sewer?
Yes — before any work begins, you’ll need approval from your local water authority under a Section 106 Agreement. Don’t worry though — Yorkshire Septics handles the entire application process on your behalf, ensuring all permissions are in place before we start.
How long does a mains connection take to complete?
Most mains sewer connections take around 5–10 working days, depending on site access, ground conditions, and weather. This includes excavation, installation, connection, and reinstatement so your property is left neat and tidy.
Can every property connect to the mains sewer?
Not always — some rural or remote locations don’t have a nearby public sewer within a reasonable distance. During our site visit, we’ll check the availability of a mains connection and, if it’s not feasible, advise on suitable alternatives such as a Sewage Treatment Plant.
What’s included in a full mains sewer connection service?
We take care of everything from start to finish — including surveys, design, Section 106 applications, excavation, installation, reinstatement, and final certification. Our team ensures your connection is fully compliant with Building Regulations and local authority standards.
We take each Sewage Treatment Plant installation from concept through to completion, including all Environment Agency permit applications and planning permissions when required.
